Turning of the Sod

Today European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly returned to her Alma Mater, Scoil Mhuire, to turn the sod and raise our 6th Green Flag. Children, teachers, parents, local dignitaries and members of the community joined in the celebrations as yet another wonderful milestone on the road to our spectacular new school was marked.

The students welcomed Ms. O’Reilly with a Guard of Honour where she was then greeted by our Principal Ms. Fionnuala Doheny. Ms. O’Reilly was then reunited with her very first teacher Mrs. May Dowling. After a very heartfelt speech of her happy memories at Scoil Mhuire, Ms. O’Reilly officially turned the sod of our new school building.

Green team co-ordinator Ms. Nancy Mahon and Ms. O’Reilly presented the Green Team members with certs and a little gift for all their hard work. Then Ms. O’Reilly raised the Green Flag and the choir sang a lovely rendition of You are My Brother.

Our school dancers Daltaí performed their wonderful international piece to a fabulous reception. This was followed by the school anthem sung by the choir.

Ms. O’Reilly took a trip down memory lane and visited her old classroom and spotted her name in the Roll Book. She then had the opportunity to peruse the collection of school memorabilia such as the original school plans of 1957, the school bell as well a wonderful collection of musical instruments and curriculum books – including classics like Anne and Barry.

The icing on this magical day was the stunning weather and the glorious sunshine.
